A Visit to Bethlehem

During the Christmas season, we strive to do as many family-oriented activities as possible, and to keep the focus on Christ. This is why we so enjoy visiting Bethlehem every year.
“Experience Bethlehem” is a walk-through re-creation of Bethlehem on the night of Christ’s birth, held at a local church. Each night, 175 volunteers take part in putting the production together, acting as shepherds, soldiers, shopkeepers, innkeepers, and baby Jesus, as he is watched over by Mary and Joseph.
As our family entered the city we were approached by Roman soldiers and asked to pay our “taxes” (canned food, which is collected to be donated to local charities), and were then counted for the census. The tour of the city included various shops, a traditional Jewish home and synagogue, and even a jail. Along the path we encountered men giving free chariot rides, angels singing, and angels and wisemen telling stories of Christ’s upcoming birth — until we finally passed the innkeeper and came to the stable where Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus were staying.

After the tour of the city, we were all treated to hot cocoa and cookies.
So much work goes into this wonderful recreation, which the children enjoy immensely, and it truly is a gift to the community.
